DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION
The Forest Resources Association (FRA) is a national association that represents the interests of more than 330 organizations and businesses in the forest products industry, including forest landowners, suppliers, consuming mills, associated businesses, and state forestry associations. Members all share a common interest – they rely on FRA to promote the public policy interests of the forest products industry’s supply chain on Capitol Hill and our work to advance safety, operational and technical efficiencies, and supply chain relations. FRA has member representation in 49 states and 377 Congressional Districts. FRA’s national office is in Washington, DC, with five regional representatives across the U.S.
FRA is actively recruiting an executive leader to replace the current President, who is retiring after a long and successful tenure.
The FRA President is the organization’s executive leader who oversees all aspects of FRA. Specifically, the President will:
- Provide innovative leadership concerning organizational and strategic planning and management expertise to improve performance and achieve results.
- Advance FRA’s advocacy efforts for industry issues at the federal level to achieve member-directed national public policy goals.
- Develop new and maintain existing coalition networks to achieve organizational goals.
- Recruit new and retain existing members.
- Develop and maintain rapport, trust, and confidence among staff, members, and senior decision-makers.
The President’s responsibilities include establishing short and long-term goals, budgeting, ensuring the proper allocation of resources, and ensuring the association meets its mission and strategic goals. The President is accountable to the Chairman, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors, and acts as the face of the association. The President oversees a small team of staff and consultants representing the organization at the regional level and in advocacy at the federal level.
Applicants should have excellent leadership and decision-making skills, be innovative and entrepreneurial, and have exceptional financial and operational working knowledge.
Activities include, but are not limited to:
- Oversee budgets, staff, and consultants, and evaluate the association’s success.
- Meet with the Executive Committee, board members, and other executives to assess the organization’s direction, develop short and long-term goals, plans, and strategies, and ensure the company’s compliance with the stated vision and mission.
- Provide leadership support for new member recruitment, retention, and orientation efforts.
- Lead public policy efforts at the federal level in coordination with the V.P. of Government Affairs and members of the Public Policy/Advocacy Committee.
- Assume a leadership role, in partnership with other industry state and/or national associations, to support federal government advocacy activities and other policy priorities.
- Oversee the association’s complete operation and ensure all goals are met based on the organization’s strategic plans.
- Communicate effectively with the FRA staff team to understand their viewpoints.
- Maintain consistent knowledge of the association’s finances.
- Analyze budgets and monthly financial reports.
- Update and revise plans to increase the association’s profitability and progress.
- Develop Strategic Analyses – lead the association in an ongoing analysis that envisions, identifies, and implements strategic initiatives based on member needs.
- Exhibit leadership in networking activities. Assume a visible leadership role at association and social functions.
- Travel to meet with members and attend relevant meetings.
- A bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related field.
- 8-10 years of association experience gained through progression to a leadership position through various roles.
- A basic understanding of the forest products or adjacent industry is an advantage.
- Financial and operational knowledge.
- Recognition of the importance of regionally unique issues.
- Confident and effective public speaking skills
- Effective leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Innovative and entrepreneurial mindset, with motivational abilities
- Ability to effectively communicate with a small core team of staff and consultants to achieve the mission and vision of the association.
